Gooding & Company, Amelia Island
To demonstrate just how popular The Amelia (formerly the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance) is among enthusiasts, a trio of auctions occur during the days leading up to the weekend’s grand display on two fairways. California’s Gooding & Company crossed the continent for the 13th time to partake in the 2022 festivities, and while that may not be a lucky number for some, it proved to be a jackpot.
Though the Amelia Island, Florida, sale is not the company’s flagship event, its one-day auction on Friday, March 4, brought 99 stunning automotive lots. Differing from typical auction practice elsewhere, veteran auctioneer Charlie Ross jumped right into the auction — there was no automobilia to loosen up bidders, so the action started hot and stayed hot.
It reached a deafening crescendo as lot number 54 neared: a storied 1937 Talbot-Lago T150-C-SS Teardrop Coupe that was, without question, the star of the event. Bidding opened at $5 million, and it steadily climbed as it came down to two in-house bidders. It eventually sold for $13,425,000, setting a world auction record for both the chassis design and a French car (all listed sale prices include a buyer’s premium).
If you think the bidding.
