So you like the idea of a T5/T6? Well, form an orderly queue because VW’s voluminous Transporter is currently one of the most sought after and versatile vehicles you can buy.
Having made over 8.5 million commercials since the iconic Split Window Bus back in the 1950s, the T5, when unveiled in 2003, immediately dominated the marketplace, being larger overall and more modern looking than the T4 it replaced. T5 engines offered better performance, economy and refinement too, and with a Panel Van, Kombi (a crossover between a van and people carrier), minibus-like Shuttle, plusher Caravelle people carrier and a chassis cab – with either single or double cab options, it was supremely flexible. With a choice of two wheelbases, three roof heights and four weights – the maximum payload being an impressive 3.2 tonnes – along with a variety of options to do with the sliding side doors as well as the tailgate, it’s no wonder it's become a firm favourite among those wishing to put their own stamp on things.
As well as the four-wheel drive 4Motion version (from 2009), there’s also the firm’s own camper, the California, with elevating roof, a fold-down bed, table and kitchen units inside making it ideal for weekend getaways.
These aspects, along with rock solid build and that classy VW emblem on the grille, helps explain the explosion of interest in the T5 as a lifestyle choice.
