t the time of this disaster, Sweden’s King Gustavus II Adolphus was leading an expansion war in northeastern Europe. He had approved the plans for the elaborate, impressive vessel, and looked forward to its completion. The heavily armed set sail with 64 cannons. It also carried nearly 2,000 pounds of gunpowder on its maiden voyage, plus ammunition for many other guns. Cannons on had been able to sail properly, it would have become the most feared vessel on the Baltic Sea.
