If there was a category for ‘unlikeliest feature rig ever’, surely a Toyota Camry would rank somewhere near the top of the list, if not at the absolute apex of that metric. The mere utterance of the name ‘Camry’ generally kick-starts a wave of joking and derision, at least from a performance standpoint.
After all, the Camry has come to stand for nothing more than dependable transport for a few generations of taxi drivers, sales reps, and, of course, grandparents across the nation. We could even go so far as to say the platform is the automotive representation of the word ‘beige’. They’re not especially offensive in any sense; it ’s just more that the Camry has never really made even the slightest case for exciting motoring — at least until you’ve flipped to this page and cast your eyes across this slammed sedan from South Africa.
