To bring together the work of Aboriginal, diasporic Australian and international artists is a formidable task: How to give visibility to the complexity of lived experience without homogenising or universalising?

Cementa was founded in Kandos in mid-2012 by Dr. Ann Finegan, Georgie Pollard, and Alex Wisser, and perhaps inspired in part by the closure of the cement plant in the town in 2011. A biennial event, its name a play on Manifesta and documenta, both major exhibitions of international contemporary art held in Europe.
