Root system

This dark-looking compost had the majority of the roots found in the lower half of the external rootball, also with less volume of root even in this limited area. Opening the rootball, it was noticeable that there was a much more even distribution of roots throughout all levels of compost on the inside, unlike the appearance on the outside. This is usually an indication that there is a good balance between moisture retention and air space within the compost.

Top growth

The top growth was thin, but with plenty of short side shoots. The average height was 6¼in (16cm) and width 8in (20cm), while the flower size averaged 2½in (6cm) across. These plants appeared to be struggling, with two showing signs of dying back at the top, but new
