MY mother is hunched over her sewing machine, concentrating furiously.
She’s about to turn 90 – or, as my friend Mark calls it, ‘sixty-and-a-half’.
‘That looks lovely,’ I say encouragingly. Always a good thing for the elderly to have a nice hobby, I like to think. ‘Is it an outfit for your party?’
She looks up at me briefly. She manages to pack a whole lot of wither into that look.
