“THE BRIEF ASKED that we make the kitchen present more like furniture,” says Ben Robertson, director of Tecture architecture studio in Melbourne, of this masterfully versatile design. With the appliances tucked away at one end of the kitchen, an island bench becomes “a sculptural piece” that transitions, in both form and function, through to the rest of the house. “The island has become a flexible area to eat, read or casually work,” says Ben. What luxury items did you choose for this kitchen regardless of budget? The suite of integrated Fisher & Paykel appliances, Silver Ash stone and ribbed timber veneer all set the tone for the quietly luxe design scheme. “We wanted to honour the existing language and materiality, but in a contemporary manner,” he says. tecture.com.au

bench is the focal point of this refined, contemporary kitchen in a revamped 40-year-old home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Flexibility, light and “Refined detailing of materials and junctions and careful resolution of proportions, lighting and fixtures took time and were not the easiest or cheapest solutions. They bring a sense of quality and finesse that is palpable and absolutely worthwhile.”
