Reflected light

Light and its myriad effects provide a constant and compelling theme for many artists, from the past to the present day and is a key inspiration for my own choice of subject matter. When looking at a brightly lit scene, we are immediately aware of the highlights and shadows that describe form and structure. But closer inspection will reveal changes in tone and colour temperature within the shadows, caused by reflected light.

What is reflected light?

Reflected light is the result of light rays being bounced or reflected from one surface to another. Light rays may travel from a direct source such as the sun, a light bulb or fire, or an indirect source where they have been scattered and filtered by clouds, trees, mist or buildings, and so on,
