THE Darien Gap breakthrough, part of the 1972 pan-Americas expedition undertaken in two new Range Rovers, is still a legendary motor journey. When I interviewed Darien Gap expedition leader Colonel John Blashford-Snell (JBS) for LRM, he mentioned there was a 50-year anniversary reunion in the planning. My request to attend was approved, and that day has arrived.
For a 50-year anniversary of an expedition that involved over 100 people, managing to bring together 18 in a Dorset country pub is a significant accomplishment, and perhaps testament to the resilient types who originally signed up for the adventure.
