The first time I heard that people were serving life sentences for marijuana was in 2013 while I was producing a documentary titled 420-The Documentary. I thought I had heard it all during the nine years I’d served of a 24-year mandatory sentence for conspiracy charges related to the drug MDMA.
I was spared the last 15 years of my sentence due to exhaustive time spent in featuring my story explaining how women were being swept up by our nation’s conspiracy laws. The article drew the attention of two senators from Arkansas, my home state. They, along with several others, stepped in to help me secure clemency in the form of a commutation of sentence.
