How exchange rate dynamics affect SA’s agriculture sector

Over the past year, the rand-US dollar exchange rate has been on a rollercoaster ride (see graph). April saw the strengthening of the local currency when it fell to R14,50 to the US dollar on the back of strong export commodity prices. Subsequently, it breached R16 to the US dollar in May, due to concerns about tighter global monetary policies and increasing concerns around inflation.
