The good old days …

here has been talk recently that because Monaco pays much lower fees than other nations for the right to hold a Formula 1 (F1) race, the long-dubbed ‘jewel in the Grand Prix crown’ might be in jeopardy for the 2023 calendar. The first Monaco Grand Prix (GP) was in 1929 and so was already part of the fabric of the sport long before the term ‘Formula 1’ was invented in the late 1940s. The event has for decades been on the wish list of sports enthusiasts who like to tick off name events and right at the top of the list for motor racing fans. For years people have told me that they want to include a GP on their overseas trip and asked which ones I’d recommend. My answer has never altered: Spa or Monza followed by Silverstone, although deep down I know that despite what I or their own heads tell them, their hearts will win out.
