Susie Berry

“A FREAK of nature.” That’s how 26-year-old County Down born and bred but now British-based event rider Susie Berry describes her 2022 Badminton mount, the fabulously named John The Bull.

They skipped clear across country around what was the pair’s first five-star back in May, finishing a creditable 17th.

“We had only done one CCI4*-L prior to Badminton and I would never dream of doing that on another horse – people kept coming up to me and saying, ‘Are you not going to Luhmühlen?’” explains Susie, as we sit chatting in her tack room in Northamptonshire. “He’s so scopey and brave – I just hoped that Badminton would suit him and it did.”

John, who is now 11 years old, arrived with the nickname “Golden Balls”, and you can tell he sees himself as king of his castle.

“He’s arrogant, which is the reason he’s good,” says Susie. “He’s a grumpy pest 90% of the time, but as soon as you put tack on him, he wants
