A mechanical engineer once explained to me that repair is a simplistic, binary process of broken in, fixed out. Maybe this was once true of hardware-based issues, but I’m assuming my pal worked in a software-free environment. We all marvel at the invisible layers of different codebases, harmoniously creating platforms for work and entertainment, until one minuscule update shatters our tranquillity.

Beth writes specialist textbooks with stunning illustrations and photos, but her Dell tower was feeling the strain despite being no slouch. An Intel Core i7-4790 with 16GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB SSD and a stack of hard disks had been perfectly adequate until her photographer updated their camera, ballooning the file sizes of the images. Crashes and stalls increased in frequency and the near miss of an important deadline persuaded Beth that more grunt was required.

Given the relatively high spec, the few credible upgrade options were unlikely to make a big difference. Beth is a Dell fan and keen on its support. She’ll happily splash out to ensure a Dell technician can be dropped
