    1919 – A rich man’s pastime

    The story of the touring caravan as we know it today stretches back to the late 1800s.

    Dr Gordon Stables, a well-travelled retired naval officer, wrote a number of children’s stories based on his experiences.

    Stables also decided to travel around the UK, camping and writing of his adventures along the way, and on the road he witnessed Gypsies travelling with their own homes, horse-drawn caravans.

    He noted how these caravans were built in a certain style. Fascinated by this way of life, he looked more deeply into the lifestyle of freedom these go-anywhere folk enjoyed.

    Stables wanted one of these horse-drawn caravans and decided to have one built by the Bristol
