BARBARA GITTINGS (1932-2007)

Known for: helping declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder

A relentless gay-rights activist, Barbara Gittings is as staunch as they come. She grew up in the US at a time when psychiatrists believed they could ‘cure’ gay people, but young Gittings knew queer folk deserved better. With little information available on lesbian life during her formative years, and no one to turn to, she obsessively sought out books to understand her sexuality. Insatiable in her research, she went to California to visit gay-rights groups, and in 1958, founded the New York chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis, a trailblazing lesbian organisation. Gittings
