The chisel tip on a standard twist drill will dance across a piece of steel or wood unless you use a centre punch to create a start point and then a pilot drill to start the hole. The pilot drill needs to be just slightly larger in diameter than the chisel point is wide. This will allow the twist drill to seat and then to cut away on centre.
The problem you have when using a standard twist drill to bore holes in wood is that, even if you use a centre punch and then a pilot hole, you will have a drill bit turning inside a hole that is made of fibres. The cellulose fibres will “grab”
