LIKE A PHOENIX from the ashes, 2022 will see the FIM World Supercross Championship resurrected with completely new formats, structures, teams and races. With an Australian-based company at the helm and two of our most successful race teams confirmed for the pits, the 2022 World SX will have a distinct Aussie flavour to it. But, how can new promoters, SX Global, succeed when even the global governing body of motorcycling, the FIM, couldn't make a World Supercross Championship work?
The FIM tried a range of different initiatives before, piggybacking the World Championship onto the AMA Supercross Championship, with one token round in Canada to achieve “international” status. 2017 marked the last year with the series then reverting to a purely American championship. While COVID was apportioned the blame for Feld not renewing its agreement with the FIM, the writing had been on the wall for some time.
Now SX Global is an all-new entity operated by the same people who own AME Management, the crowd behind the AUS-X Open between 2015 and 2019. FIM announced SX Global as the new promoter early this year, and there's a lot to love about what they're offering. They had financial support from Abu Dhabi's government-owned Mubadala Investment Company, and as a result, are able to promise huge prizemoney, shake up the formats, and provide financial support for the 10 teams that commit four racers each (two 450 and
