Time for Home Ec

n a long-ago land where cell phones, the internet, social media, fast-food restaurants and takeout didn’t exist, high school girls of my generation took home economics class. Unlike today’s diverse high school curriculum, home ec was one of the few electives available to us girls in 1967. Boys, of course, didn’t take home economics. It just didn’t happen. We girls, of course, didn’t take shop class. Doing so was simply unheard of. After all, boys—and only boys—would need shop skills to fix their cars or make home repairs. Likewise, girls—and only girls—would need sewing, cooking and home management skills.
