Splash! Sights Cuvier’s Beaked Whale
Back in April, Cascadia Research Collective’s Robin Baird challenged Hawai‘i fishers to join the Cascadia community science effort to photograph and catalog toothed whales and dolphins in Hawaiian waters. Splash! answered the call.
It’s easy to do community offshore science and you can, too. The first video we sent was identified by Cascadia as images of bottlenose dolphins. Our second community science video was confirmed as a rare sighting of a Cuvier’s beaked whale.
“Anything you can do to encourage folks to submit photos would be greatly appreciated,” Baird says. “We do not share or publish photos from submissions without the permission of the photographer, so folks can send in photos without worrying about them showing up on social media or otherwise.”
Fishing offshore of Hilo on the Force 21 MO BETTAH, we came across a pod of marine mammals. The pod of about four or five approached, and one animal moved directly off our bow. With iPhone at the ready, we captured good video.
