With summer days on the wane and cooler temperatures sure to follow, it’s time to start thinking about asters. These end-of-season beauties really kick into gear when other plants are winding down, pollinators love them and they bring a cooler palette of purple and blue blooms to the traditional warm hues of autumn.

FALL FLOWERS Asters’ small daisylike blooms are often found in shades of purple or blue with a yellow center. ‘Purple Dome’ New England aster at right is a great example. And its mounded habit fits right in at the front of the border. There are also a few species and varieties that have pink or white blooms. Grow several different asters, and you can get loads of color from late August to early November.
