Surround Yourself With a Garden

Recharging your batteries and taking a break from the hectic pace of everyday life can be as easy as walking out your back door and into the garden. It’s easier to relax and let go of tension and stress while you enjoy the colors, textures, sounds, movement and fragrance that surround you.

You can create a little getaway or make the whole backyard an oasis for family and friends. Whatever its size, plants are a key element to setting the mood and style of your getaway.

Space for dining with friends is surrounded by trees, shrubs and perennials in photo 1. Having plants tightly planted to the space makes you feel like you’re a part of the garden—you can enjoy the scent of the rose (Rosa hybrid) or admire the exotic blooms of the calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) up close.

In photo 2 a sun-loving golden privet x), spirea () and a pink hydrangea () lead to this quiet patio in the shade. Most flowering plants and those with gold foliage need more sun. Choose plants that suit the growing conditions so they grow (and look) their best.
