GOING FOR GLORY
Emma McKeon
Lately it’s been her love life grabbing the headlines, but when this champion hits the pool in Birmingham, Emma McKeon will be all business.
McKeon, the most decorated athlete on the Australian team, has entered in four individual events: the 50m and 100m in both freestyle and butterfly. And that’s just the start – if she’s in the form everyone expects her to be in, the 28-year-old could be competing in up to five relays, putting her in contention for nine gold medals. She’s already got eight gold and four bronze Commonwealth Games medals, so barring any injury or upset, she looks set to smash the records of legends Ian Thorpe, Susie O’Neill and Leisel Jones.
“The Commonwealth Games is such a special thing for our country, so I really wanted to be part of that team,” McKeon said ahead of her campaign.
And of course she’ll be cheering from the sidelines for her new beau Cody Simpson, who is also a strong medal contender in the 50m and 100m butterfly events. they had a connection the moment they met.
