It was a quiet almost sleepy moment in the elliptical Piazza dell’Anfiteatro in the centre of the Tuscan city of Lucca. Then, the sound of a Puccini aria sung unaccompanied filled the paved square.

The handful of citizens entering and leaving the piazza via the four covered archways stopped in their tracks. Francesco da Mosto facing the camera filming his series Francesco’s Italy: Top to Toe was moved to tears by the soprano’s voice and the setting in Puccini’s home town.

The moment was one of the highlights of a four-part series that heads a very long list of my favourite travel programmes.
