IT WAS in 1947 that Minsmere first officially opened its gates – five years before the Queen took the throne,
Nestled on the beautiful Suffolk coast, it is one of the charity’s best-loved and most-visited reserves, largely because of the fantastic range of species to see there.
It was originally created to provide a haven for rare wildlife in the area, and with more than 6000 species recorded in the ensuing 75 years, it can certainly claim to have done that. And more.
One of the main reasons for this success is the site boasts a remarkable mix of habitats, with reed bed, wet grassland, shingle vegetation, woodland and lowland heath all combining to make this an ideal home for a huge range of wildlife.
