“Wow,” said Harrison as we crested the top of the climb on our bikes, “it’s the most beautiful view I’ve ever seen!” The cirque of Lac d’Estaing revealed itself in all of its natural beauty – a huge bowl-shaped depression carved by glaciers, holding serene azure-blue water.

We pedalled on slowly, marvelling at the grandeur of the Pyrenean landscape, the soft clang of cow-bells carrying across the lake and filling the warm evening air.

I looked across and saw the joy etched onto his face, and in turn was filled with an indescribable happiness. These are the kind of moments we dreamt of when Kim and I started planning our Big European Odyssey, moments that we hope will stay with Harrison and Dorothy for many years to come – as well as ourselves. That this one arrives in such an unexpected fashion adds to the pleasure of the gorgeous surroundings.
