At 1115 hours on 12 June, 1971 I left behind the village of Dale, sailed past St Ann’s Head, almost the extreme south-west point of Wales, and set off alone in my 30ft sloop Aziz to brave the Atlantic Ocean, and a journey of 4,000 miles.
Forty-four-and-a-half days later I arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, and first set foot in the New World.
Because I was the only woman to have succeeded in crossing the Atlantic non-stop and alone, my arrival made a small splash in history. My first reaction when I stepped ashore was to dismiss the past six weeks,
