My favourite books in childhood
y lifelong love of mystery and thrills began with the Hardy Boys when I was about eight or nine. But before then, the books my mates and I were obsessed with – when we weren’t kicking a ball around or pretending to be Richard … literally, almost. Given my mystery proclivities and later globetrotting and journalism, it may have made more sense if I’d preferred Tintin, which our library also stocked. But for me, it was always the indomitable Gauls.
