Only finished demos! Unfinished tracks are a big stumbling block. Only send material that is finished in its current state.

Research: Contact labels only if they release music at least close to yours. Don‘t speculate that the A&R there knows someone who knows someone. Usually the doors will close immediately and forever. Also, check if the labels accept demos at all.
