I am a lifelong fan of eventing; I’ve been to every major event at the Kentucky Horse Park since the 1978 World Championships … 44 years and counting. The KHP is the best equestrian facility in the world and year after year draws the best competitors. The 2022 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event lived up to its billing as “the best weekend all year” in no small part due to the throngs of spectators who brought a sense of atmosphere and occasion to an event that sadly lacked it last year when the pandemic prevented attendees.
This year’s crowd was treated to as fine a spectacle as I have seen at the KHP in a long time. Expecting the competitors to put on a dazzling display of excellence, I was not disappointed. Germany’s Michael Jung, a perennial winner at Kentucky, rode with matchless technical skill. Informed onlookers shook their heads at his obvious competence and even more so at his intimate partnership with fischerChipmunk FRH (Contendro I x Heraldik xx). This 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding must be the best horse in the world right now.
Although in years past I have been critical of our U.S. results at the KHP, this year I feel no shame
