CLASS 20

A busy winter and spring for the English Electric Type 1s has been followed by a quiet start to the summer, so it was pleasing to find Nos. 20007+20142 out and about on June 9. The pair ran light from Tyseley to the Midland Railway Centre, where they collected Railvac machine No.3 for the 6X20 12.14 Butterley-Toton. Then, on June 27, Nos. 20107+20096 hauled Nos. 26007 and 37703 from Barrow Hill to Crewe and on to the East Lancashire Railway next morning, reaching Manchester Victoria a little before midday.

CLASS 37

Throughout June this popular class performed a variety of duties although passenger work was limited. No. 37706 did, however, appear at the head of the 1Z52 07.32 Chester-Carlisle on June 7, ‘top and tailing’ with No. 47270 as far as Hellifield, with the latter leading from Preston. Both locomotives powered the evening return journey from Carnforth to Chester. No. 37418 was active with saloon Caroline (No. 975025) on June 6, setting off from Crewe bound for Carlisle and travelling by way of Liverpool Lime Street (reached at midday), St Helens Central and the Settle & Carlisle line. Next day, the Type 3 and coach traversed the Cumbrian coastal route and later visited Blackpool North. Another set of coaches for the daily ‘Jacobite’ services left Carnforth for Fort William on June 27 hauled by No. 37676, while No. 37401 was a guest at the Mid Norfolk Railway gala over the second weekend in June.

No. 37218 powered the 6G06 19.39 Basford Hall-Bescot on June 2 and covered all three legs of the Basford Hall, Bescot and Toton Yard diagram six days later, returning in the evening with a single MXA wagon forming the 6K97 19.33 Toton Yard-Basford Hall. No. 37401 had tamper No. DR73118 in tow on the 6Y37 17.30 High Marnham-Toton on June 2, while classmate No. 37422 took the same Plasser & Theurer machine to York Thrall Europa on June 7. Two days after that No. 37419 was entrusted with a single wagon forming the 6K05 12.46 Carlisle Yard-Basford Hall. The following afternoon (June 10) Nos. 37419+37425 hauled No. 68009 from Carlisle to Crewe
