Washington’s stamps
George Washington has appeared on more postage stamps than any other American president, which is an indication of how he is regarded in American history and culture. As there are no photographs of Washington, stamps portraying him have mainly been based on contemporary paintings and sculptures.
Washington was born in 1732 in Virginia. At age seventeen he became a surveyor and, in 1753, a major in the Virginia militia. The following year, now a colonel, Washington led 300 men against the French at Fort Duquesne. Prominent in the movement demanding self-government, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1775. Washington led his army to victory that culminated in a peace treaty
