Protecting your knees – even if we’re just talking about cuts, scrapes and grazes – is incredibly important. As mountain bikers, we all know that at some point we’re likely to run out of talent and hit the deck. And, more often than not, our knees will be one of the first things to come into contact with the dirt. Protecting them can make the difference between jumping back on the bike and carrying on with the ride or taking a trip to A&E for some stitches (or worse). Padding up is one of the best ways to keep your knees safe and in good working order, and will also help ensure you don’t miss out on any ride time.

As with any mountain biking kit, the fit and feel of pads is somewhat subjective. Our legs come in different shapes and sizes, so while some pads will work perfectly on certain pins, they may feel awkward or, worse, uncomfortable, on others. But what constitutes a decent fit? First and foremost, they need to feel comfortable and unrestrictive when you flex your knee. If they don’t, then pedalling will be an issue. They also need to hug your leg tightly, but not uncomfortably so. Pads that shift around while you ride could leave your knees exposed when you need the protection most. Many brands use a stretchy sleeve to help hold them in place, some employ adjustable straps, others use both. Either way, a good set of pads should stay up and hold the protective knee cup in
