Bacchus and Ariadne by Titian, 1520–23
Although not his first choice of artist, it’s hard imagine that Alfonso I d’Este, Duke of Ferrara was anything but thrilled and awed when he came face-to-face with Titian’s magnificent interpretation of the meeting of Bacchus, god of wine, and Cretan princess Ariadne.
