Budget brilliance

I WAS DELIGHTED TO SEE PAUL GARRAD’S LETTER praising the Porsche 996 Carrera (Inbox, 298). I had a letter published in evo back in issue 272, bemoaning the lack of new budget-friendly performance cars. I stated that unless someone (anyone, please) started to build a car that an analogue-driving lover of average salary could afford to buy, I’d continue browsing the classifieds for used Lotuses and Porsches.

And that’s exactly what I did, eventually picking up an early manual coupe Porsche 996 C2 (pictured above), with the GT3 bodykit, with the £25k I had in my pocket at the time. I drove the wheels off that car and loved every minute of owning it, and the combined cost of trackdays, upgrades and maintenance was less
