REMEMBERING THOSE WE’VE LOST

udi Doyle, cofounder of Long Beach, Calif.’s Pride celebration, died February 8 in Yucaipa, Calif., at 78. She and three others established Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Pride, which runs the parade and other festivities, in 1983, and the city saw its first Pride parade the following year. Over the years, Doyle fought efforts by city officials to block the parade by requiring expensive insurance, and one year she even wore a bulletproof vest to the “As she discovered who she was, she discovered her passion for fighting for others and their right to whom they were meant to be. She was very much an activist and a civil rights pioneer.”
