INSTRUMENTS OF CHANGE

Ozzy Osbourne and the dark gods of Black Sabbath could never have imagined this.

In the music room of Young Oak Kim Academy, a public middle school in Los Angeles’s Koreatown, one of the world’s finest classical guitarists is about to lead students through the familiar strains of the band’s heavy metal dirge “Iron Man.”

It’s fifth period, right after lunch, in music teacher Ann Marie Salas’s class. Wearing masks and black school hoodies, the students slowly shuffle in and set up chairs and music stands. After quickly tuning acoustic Fenders and Yamahas, they listen as guitarist Bokyung “Bo” Byun outlines the day’s lesson.
