Feel-good flowers

On balmy summer days, the smells that waft through well-planted gardens are nothing short of intoxicating. It’s impossible to resist burying our noses in roses for their sweet scent, or rubbing herbs between finger and thumb to release their fresh fragrance.

Buy a bouquet of flowers from the supermarket, however, and this feast for the senses is notably absent. We unwrap the cellophane, trim stems and dutifully decant flower food, only to find we’re left cold by blooms
