‘This is bittersweet’

THE great fascination of the Hickstead Derby is that for 60 years, no matter how big the field, this gladiatorial challenge produces a similar result.

Shane Breen and Team Z7’s experienced 16-year-old stallion Can Ya Makan played their hand early, delivering the 65th clear round in the event’s history from fifth in the running order. Although conditions were idyllic, with sunshine and a strong breeze complimenting the immaculate going of the all-weather grass surface, no one else could match his performance.
