WIMBLEDON, the FA Cup, the Ashes, the Open, the foxhound show at Peterborough. What do they have in common?
Tennis, football, cricket, golf and hunting all benefited from the Victorians’ zeal to organise and celebrate their noble pastimes, and the championships were all founded within just a few years of the first “Peterborough” in 1878. A foxhound show had been held in Yorkshire since 1859, masterminded by local MFH Tom Parrington, who later advised its larger southern successor.
