n September 1859, the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history hit Earth. The Carrington Event, named after British astronomer Richard Carrington who spotted the associated solar flare, was caused probably by a coronal mass ejection from the sun hitting Earth’s magnetosphere. Telegraph stations sparked and failed, and some operators found they could continue to send and , notes, these events happen about every 150 years. “We are overdue.”
