RS Agri Sabre straw processor: Chop’n’blow
Precision processing straw for TMR feeding is becoming commonplace on livestock farms for its ability to reduce sorting and boost intakes of high straw content rations.
Downsides to the system? Inevitably, a specialist machine may be required, or a contractor called in on a regular basis, not to mention the space required to store the chopped straw which can seriously bulk out in volume. Contractors and large-scale farms may run tub grinding machines such as Energis’ Rotagrind or Haybuster, or Teagle’s Calibrator capable of processing hay and straw.
Alternatively, a number of manufacturers offer smaller dual-purpose straw bedder/choppers, and while they don’t boast the same output as specialist processors, they can sensibly chop a handful of bales where storage space is limited, or run conventionally to bed loose pens as well as feed out clamped silage or bales.
