For the pigeon shooter in Essex and Suffolk — and, judging from the various reports, the country as a whole — the recent spring was one of frustration.
Following the severe winter, during which huge quantities of cartridges were used in an attempt to keep the thousands of birds off valuable Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and other green crops, it was obvious that as soon as a thaw set in, and more food became available to the flocks of near-starving birds, the number of pigeons shot would decrease considerably.
