LATE ROMAN COIN HOARD PUZZLING TO UNDERSTAND

A major reason archaeologists don’t want amateur sleuths digging up coin hoards is that disturbing the context in which these coins are encountered can destroy valuable information surrounding these finds.

The ‘who’ and ‘why’ are among the questions still being discussed regarding a hoard of 1,290 fourth century bronze coins of Constantine I “the Great” that were properly excavated although found by an amateur armed with a metal detector in Switzerland.
