FIREBIRD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ID AND CONVERSION CANDIDATES
Q:I own a 1985 Pontiac Firebird with the 2.8-liter, 173-cu.in. V-6 with multi-port injection, paired to an automatic transmission. Can you identify which transmission I have and if it is possible to add a different manual transmission instead?

A: Your car most likely came with the 700R4 overdrive automatic, which is a mostly reliable unit, especially given that it is behind the Chevy 2.8 V-6. An easy way to check is to count the oil pan bolts —there should be 16. Converting to a manual shift would be quite involved;
