MORE AVELING STEAM ROLLERS IN SOUTH AMERICA
The ‘Mayor’s Bicycle’ in Chile was recently featured in OG 385 and further searches on the internet have revealed that more Aveling rollers were shipped to its neighbouring South American country of Uruguay in days gone by. In Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, there’s a slide-valve compound machine which was apparently left parked up in a yard in the Cerrito area of the city where it was photographed some time ago; it’s since been moved to the Museo Fernando Garcia. Of particular interest in respect of this roller is that on the visible rear roll it’s fitted with an Aveling-Barford ‘horseshoe’ style plate, suggesting that it had been supplied with at least one replacement roll quite late in its commercial life.
