ounded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, the Universal Film Manufacturing Company’s affinity for macabre movies first reared its head in the 1920s with the success of its lavish silent productions of (1923) and (1925). Both films starred Lon Chaney in the title role and made a major feature of the groundbreaking and grotesque make-up effects he created for each character.
