KARKALLA NEAR SORRENTO, Victoria, sits among the tertiary dunes – the third dune back from the beach, covered in what is classified as alkaline scrub. Named after the native succulent which is rampant across the property, Karkalla is far enough away from the ocean to be protected from direct sea spray but not immune to the effects of a marine environment in terms of corrosion. Since I had no experience living so close to the coast, some trial and error was involved when it came to plant selection and subsequent success.
