What’s coming to Netflix in June? The new TV series and films to watch from Borgen to Peaky Blinders

Summer is upon us, which means it’s time for long, lazy weekends and relaxing holidays.

Whatever you have planned, Netflix has you covered. Whether you’re hoping to hone your language skills with some international thrillers or catch up on the sixth series of Peaky Blinders, here’s the best of what’s coming to the streaming platform this month.

Netflix Originals

Borgen – Power and Glory

The cult Danish hit is back and the political stakes are higher than ever. Birgitte Nyborg is back in government as Denmark’s first female prime minister, but she’s firefighting problems both at home and abroad. This season, she’s dealing with a struggle for oil in the Danish protectorate of Greenland: timely.

Interceptor

Get ready for some nail-biting in this tense thriller. This film sees Elsa Pataky play Captain JJ Collins, who finds herself in charge of a nuclear missile interceptor base in the middle of the Pacific. However, things swiftly go wrong when she meets Alexander Kessel, who wants to use the base to carry out a terrible plan… can she stop him?

First Kill

Who said vampires were out of fashion? This supernatural YA series has already been described as “Twilight meets Romeo and Juliet). It follows teens Juliette (a vampire) and Calliope (a vampire hunter): both are ready to make their first kill, but instead they might just find themselves falling in love instead.

Halftime

Everybody needs more J.Lo in their lives, and fortunately she is back to bless us with more Netflix content – this is first of several upcoming films. In this one, Halftime, she takes us behind the curtain during a hectic period of her life: the upcoming 2019 Superbowl Halftime show and the awards race for her film Hustlers.

Maldivas

This Portuguese-language series is one of several Brazilian productions that Netflix is releasing in the next few months. This one follows a young woman who moves into a “posh condo community, where she comes into contact with its quirky — and suspicious — residents.” Spooky.

Spiderhead

Chris Hemsworth is never anything less than charismatic, but this film might make you see him a little differently. In Spiderhead, Hemsworth stars alongside Miles Teller as Steve Abnesti, a visionary scientist who experiments on inmates with mind-altering drugs – though they don’t know it.

Out June 17

Love & Gelato

Based on the Jenna Evans Welch novel of the same name, this film (as the name suggests) is a rom-com set in Italy. In it, an American high school graduate flies to Italy to follow her dying mother’s last wish. Naturally, things don’t go entirely to plan: in fact, love may be on the horizon.

The Umbrella Academy (Season 3)

Everybody’s favourite supernatural, dysfunctional family is back for a third helping of time-travelling shenanigans. This time around, the Hargreeves siblings must face off against the Sparrow Academy, a parallel-universe version of The Umbrella Academy with all-new siblings and all-new powers. Also, the world is about to end. Cue chaos.

Man Vs Bee

Ever wondered who would win if Rowan Atkinson took on a bee? Wonder no longer: this TV series casts Atkinson as a Mr Bean-adjacent character who gets into it with a small, annoying insect. With each episode clocking in at ten minutes long, it’s a binge-able afternoon of mishaps and disaster.

New to Netflix

The Hurt Locker

This iconic film is finally headed to Netflix for you to enjoy. Starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Ralph Fiennes and more, the film follows an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team who are embedded in Iraq during the war. Unfortunately for them, the team are targeted by insurgents and things rapidly begin to spiral out of control.

The Amazing Spider-Man

One of the more recent iterations of the forever-rebooted franchise, this one stars Andrew Garfield as the titular webslinger. In this film, he acquires his powers and faces off against Rhys Ifans, who plays scientist Dr Curt Connors. Naturally, Dr Connors’ attempts to inject himself with serum to replace his missing hand go about as well as you’d expect and he turns into The Lizard. Mayhem ensues.

Titanic

Our hearts will go on and on… just like this film. James Cameron’s multi-award winning blockbuster is, as the name suggests, all about the passengers and crew aboard the doomed ship Titanic. Of special interest are Jack and Rose, a couple from opposite sides of the tracks who forge a relationship in the weeks before the ship goes down. Bring tissues.

Peaky Blinders (Season 6)

In the bleak midwinter, Netflix has come to bless us with another series of Peaky Blinders. In this, the latest (and dare we say, last?) season - now on Netflix, having migrated from the BBC - Tommy Shelby has more on his plate than ever before. Struggling to keep the Peaky Blinders afloat, he has to battle Oswald Mosley on one side, threats from newcomers – and machinations from inside his own family…

Philomena

Judi Dench is always on form, but she shines especially brightly in Philomena. Based on the 2009 book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, the film follows Dench as Philomena, an Irish woman who gave her newborn son up for adoption during her youth – and Steve Coogan plays Martin Sixsmith, the journalist trying to help her. Expect tears.

Grey’s Anatomy (Season 18)

It’s the show that never dies – much like, ideally, many of its patients. In its eighteenth series, Meredith Grey’s team of doctors and medical staff deal with life-threatening injuries, personal drama, operations going wrong and PTSD. Working in a hospital has never seemed so stressful.
